How is a Teaser Trailer made?
Teaser Trailers are made for the promotion of most films, this allows directors to entice an audience months prior to the releaser of their film. However, it is clear and logical that the more money a film has to spend the bigger and better the promotion will be. Successful trailers are normally from massive conglomerate film companies who are able to hire the highest quality of actor, directors and editors due to their (seems like) limitless budget.
In the beginning it will show a few quick screens showing the logos of the studio that made the film, the production company or distributor, These images, though brief, are important — the people involved with the film want to receive due credit for the time and money they've spent on it. At this point non-diegetic music will begin to create a certain mood which will correlate to the genre of the film.
In the most basic terms a teaser trailer must consist of a main character in a predicament. Most teasers start with the existing flaw that hampers the character from addressing the main challenge of the film. Once they have established the film's "status quo," they introduce its main conflict — the people, things, feelings and events that will form the basis for the story. In other words, they show the audience why it should care about the characters and themes they've just introduced them to. In the case of Godzilla, the director worked with the editor to show Tokyo as vulnerable to potential monster attack or the chaos when the unexpected monster appears. By adding music and dialogue this will heighten the tension leading up to the main conflict. In an action/disaster film for example, this would include lots of shots of people on the phone, getting into tanks, running for the door or looking up and screaming. Sometimes they include an authoritative voice-over to tie it all together.
Teaser Trailers are most frequently released around six - eight months in advance of the actual films full release for cinemas.
